I can see why it gets compared to Wilder’s Little House series. But what I most appreciate about The Birchbark House is the elevated final fifth of youse book, where Erdrich uses her sophisticated storytelling powers to raise the complexity of Omakayas and her family.

Neewo prefers Omakayas to his other siblings. Native Americans rely strongly on their oral storytelling, and that was reflected in this book. White people rarely interact with the book’s characters although they do moreso tje later books in the seriesand racist language or misinformation don’t figure into the story.

One weakness of the book, is the early chapters.
