This is a big and heavy book. There are movie props, huge piles of books, all sorts of character figures, a few life-size sculptures, one is of H. But my point is, this is a very specific book for a very specific sort of reader and movie-fan. It’s really insightful to read about how the ideas morph and evolve.
It’s a fascinating peek into an immensely creative mind. The book is divided into three sections. Interspersed throughout the book are what I’ve come to call “love letters” to del Toro, brief interludes written by various directors, actors, producers, authors, and other people who have worked with del Toro in some capacity over the years.
The notebooks themselves constitute a love letter to his daughters and through this book, guilelrmo his fansbut the various anecdotes and interviews throughout the book reveal a man who is not only supremely happy in his own life, but has made it his mission to spread that happiness to everyone he possibly can.

And that is certainly not a complaint, either. It is visually stunning, gives you insight into the man as well as his artistic vision, and even a glimpse of some of his unfinished projects. If you have the opportunity to do so, I can highly recommend this method of delving into the work of this master filmmaker; it’s a great way to encounter some of the creative processes Guillermo goes through in the film making process while getting to enjoy the movies with a new appreciation.

An absolutely stunning insight into the limitless imagination and surreal brain of one of the most interesting and creative artists of all time — duriosities must-read for anyone who wants to understand GDT better or wants to appreciate his work on a more visceral gukllermo.
The best part, though, is getting to view his notebooks over the years, which are way too beautiful for me to cheap up by posting a couple of pictures from my shitty phone.
