Spurred on by the devastation of the earthquake and the words of the preacher the earthquake was – surprise surprise – God’s punishment for sin the story ends in brutality. When an earthquake destroys much of Santiago while they are awaiting death, the two are set free and all seems well – until they decide, instead of fleeing, to listen to a sermon in the cathedral.
Afterwards, a supposedly reverent church follower begins to chastise the two for their evil deeds, and asks for even more vengeance to be incurred. The short story uses the idea of an earthquake, as a sign from God, to change the destiny of the lovers Jeronimo and Josefa.
