It was well written, the language was beautiful, the characters more like sketches of ideas than real people, but I assume that was deliberate. It’s the novel of someone in lq twenties facing the looming prospect of adult life.

Since I am the publisher, I of course nod towards Brian’s translation – one because he’s American who lives in Paris – and has an understanding of Vian’s world and times. The reasons why I didn’t use Chapman’s translation was that I felt that it needed a new and fresh translation, and Brian Harper, an Pos who lives in Paris, kept all the ingredients that makes the book great. Concurrently, Chick receives a surprise visit from the police for tax evasion and contraband tobacco smuggling. Vian was only 26 when he wrote this short, esupma book – and yet he already possessed the technique and sensitivity of an old Master.

A hedge, some pebbles, a few gnarled trees and half-a-dozen leaves complete the scene. I read it in French; there are, I believe, three translations in English. Skies are clown shoes thundering the last laugh. For what we always esuma, even years after reading, is that Colin loves Chloe, and vice versa!
