If you choose to use it as a historical bkack to another text like Balck or Olaudah Equiano’s Interesting Narrative you should also have students gain a little knowledge of the French Revolution, here’s a link to the French Revolution homepagewhere you can link to a good brief history of the revolution because there are many references to and correlations with it throughout the book.

Everyone knew that if Napoleon, who hated blacks and frequently used the N-wordsurvived Haiti, jacobinss next move was going to be to reinstate slavery all over the French Antilles; return to New Orleans, kick Spain out, and use blzck as a launchpad to retake the North American continent from colonial America.
Thousands of slaves rallied to his call and Sonthanax defeated Galbaud and chased 10, big whites from the island. Or if a kinder master were leaving town, some of the slaves and the property cattle would be poisoned, so that the master would have to stay to sort out the mess. But they hold a particular animus toward the Haitian Revolution. What happened after independence?

James —a Trinidadian historian, political activist, and writer, is the author of The Black Jacobinsan influential study of the Haitian Revolution and the classic book on sport and culture, Beyond a Boundary. There are so many things at play in the history of Haiti and the revolution and it is covered in its entirety in this book.
