Lock problem "Proximity" Edition - Is it a bug or trial 'feature'?
June 03, 2010 04:37AM
I have installed "Proximity" Edition on my Omnia 2 phone, since this is the only version that works with proximity sensor. I wanted to try it out before I decide to buy but what I found out, is that it works a few times and than, the phone doesn't stay locked if the proximity sensor is covered. You have to start the application again, and then it works for a few unlockings and fails again.
I am not sure if it is a bug or a trial 'feature'. If it is a trail 'feature', than I can say, that it is hard to test the application in different situations because it stops working after a few unlockings.

Hello, trial should work the same way. Can you define a constant pattern?

Basically, I was switching display off, then covering the sensor and switching it back on. I did it a few times. After a few times, when I switch display back on, on with the sensor covered I could see the clock for a split of the second and it stayed unlocked. I couldn't get it locked unless I restarted pocketshield application. This happened a few times.

But then something else happened. After restarting the application and doing the same thing, I couldn't unlock the phone, even when the sensor was uncovered - the clock stayed on with the green indicator on as well. I had to power off the phone to get it working.

Did you install the Samsung SDK?

Yes, I have sdk version 2.2 installed - otherwise it wouldn't work at all.
I am going to write a small application to see if the proximity sensor (and Samsung API) works reliably.

Thanks, let know any results.

I have been testing proximity sensor with the application I wrote and found out that detection of the status of proximity sensor works ok while the phone is on. If the phone 'wakes up' from standby, detection is not reliable. It works for a few times and then it stops detecting it. I put a 3 sec timer to delay checking for sensor status after wake up but it still didn't work. By the way I was using RequestPowerNotifications function (PBT_TRANSITION message) to get a power-on message to start the timer. So to me it looks like Samsung API is not working correctly.

Well at least we now are sure it is not a PS issue. Is there any other app using the sensor that could be interfering?
What about your Rom? is it stock?

There is no other application that would be using proximity sensor. The only application is Samsung phone application but it is only active during a phone call.
No, it is not a stock rom, but I don't think it should matter. It is just calling a function SmiProximitySensorIsObjectNear(&bObjectIsNearby). The return value of the function is SMI_SUCCESS, but the value in bObjectIsNearby is not correct - and this is only after device wake-up.
As a last trial I might try to flash with the official Samsung rom and see if this makes any difference.

Then it only works fine for some Omnia2. Which version/country is yours?

My phone was bought in Singapore. I flashed my phone yesterday with official Samsung firmware (version I8000NXXJE3 with XEU csc) but it didn't change anything - as I suspected. It's just strange that it would work reliably on some of Omnia2 phones and not others. So, I guess I have to give up on a lockscreen with proximity sensor. Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem with my Omnia II i8000 WM 6.5.3 build 23664 (JE3)
The proximity sensor dosn't work only with PocketShield (Version 3.3.6.1)
With PhonEx works great. This means that the sensor works but not with PocketShield.
Another problem is the light sensor. Doesn't work only with PocketShield. With GAlarm work great.
I hope you solve the problem.

The problem isn't the sensor not working with PS, the problem is that randomnly the sensor will not read accordingly right after power off (the moment which PS attempts to read). For other apps like Phonex or Galarm they access the sensor far a while after being turned on, that is why they can read it fine.
Just in case can you try the proximity unlock with this older version? http://forums.jdbp.mobi/dwn/PocketShieldOmnia2.CAB

Yes, with this version light sensor works, but only with the screen on.
First I must turn on the display and then pull it out of pocket. With display turn off not work.

So the one you tried before was Proximity(1.X) or Protection(3.X) edition?

"Protection" Edition Version 3.3.6.1 and 3.3.6.2

Then it is fine. Protection edition has no sensors support for Omnia2. If you want automatic unlocking you must use Proximity edition, however some Omnia roms have issues. Let me know if Proximity edition works fine.

Sensors are not supported for Omnia2 on Protection edition.
Only few ROMs work well with Proximity edition, can you try it?

I tried and sensor works very well with the last version of "Proximity" Edition
Very strange, because the Sensor.dll is the same.

Protection edition will not work with sensors (it is not programmed to do so), you can still use it on Omnia2 but with sliding option to unlock. If you want automatic unlock use Proximity edition.
